Meet Sheriff Tomas S. Herrera

I have proudly served this Community of Maverick County as a public servant since 1974.  More importantly, I have served in different positions such as a Justice of the Peace, Chief Deputy, Municipal Court Judge, Constable, and since 2005 as your Sheriff.

This experience has allowed me to have a very well rounded perspective of what it takes to make the Sheriff’s position successful. The Texas Association of Counties describes the complex position of Sheriff in this manner:

“Long respected as the county’s top lawman, the sheriff has a range of duties that include criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, operation of the jail and other responsibilities.

Duties of the sheriff include:

  • Providing security for the operation of county and district courts;
  • Enforcing traffic laws, other county ordinances and other state laws;
  • Service of process;
  • Accepting bail for prisoners in his custody;
  • Conducting sales of seized and unclaimed properties; and
  • Taking charge of and responsibility for the county jail and prisoners.”

During the time I have served as your Sheriff, I have made it my goal to improve the department by assuring that all of the staff has the proper training, equipment, and resources to do their job right. However, I am conscious that our Community has many needs and not all of the money to do this can come from the local taxpayers.  For this reason, I make every effort to establish good credible relationships with our federal, and state legislative delegation and agencies. Equally, as important is the relationships that have been established with all local governments and law enforcement agencies.

We live next door to a country that is going through a critical phase of violence and unrest. I pledge to do everything within my power to keep our community safe so that our children can grow up in a place where they are not scared to go out.

Sincerely,

Sheriff Tomas S. Herrera
Maverick County, Texas
